Goin’ to the dogs

Dog walking and a pet care business are perennial choices for laid-off and unemployed baby boomers looking for simple self-employment. Cubicle escapee Erika Teschke left a 10-year career as a legal professional to start a dog walking/pet sitting business. While she’s still in her 30s, Erika understands both the pros and cons of her solo business.

“I definitely have more personal time now,” says the young mother. “However, the anxieties are different. Being in an office made me a slave to the man. (As a small business owner) I am responsible for everything.”

Clients pay $38 for a half-hour of dog walking (1-2 dogs). For a 60-90 min romp in the park, she charges $23 per dog. Schedule 3-5 dogs per session, and you’ll put over $100 in your pocket.

While the recession and layoffs have had some impact on Erika’s business, other pet sitters report they are booked up and happy with the balance of income and lifestyle.

Michelle Goodman, author of  The Anti 9-to-5 Guide, recently profiled Erika in the Seattle Times’ Nine to Thrive blog. Check out the full article here and Michelle’s blog here.
